Schematic of the EEG microstate method. An example EEG recording and global field power (GFP, the spatial standard deviation of the electrical field). Momentary maps at the peaks of GFP are submitted to an AAHC clustering algorithm. The four dominant template maps are shown at the bottom. Backfitting is performed by calculating the spatial correlation between the four template maps and the continuous EEG data at each time point. Labels are assigned in a winner-take-all manner to generate the microstate sequence
